Many game apps, including several casino-style apps, aren't on the Google Play Store. You install them as APK files instead. That's perfectly normal, but it puts the responsibility for safety on you. This guide shows you how to install an APK safely on Android.
What is an APK?
An APK (Android Package Kit) is the file format Android uses to install apps. The Play Store downloads and installs APKs for you behind the scenes. When you "sideload" an app, you download the APK yourself and install it manually.
The golden rule: only use official sources
The safest APK is one downloaded directly from the developer's official website.
Modified APKs from mirror sites, file-sharing groups or comment links are the number one way people end up with stolen accounts and malware. Every app page on EarnPlayMax links straight to the official site. Use those links, not search results.
Step-by-step: installing an APK
- Download the APK from the official website.
- Open the file from your notifications or the Downloads folder.
- Allow the install. Android will ask for permission to install from your browser. Tap Settings and turn on Allow from this source.
- Tap Install and wait for it to finish.
- Turn the permission off again under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps.
Check before you install
- File size: compare it with the size shown on the official site. A very different size is a red flag.
- File name: it should end in
.apk. Never install a file ending in.apk.exeor similar. - Permissions: a game doesn't need access to your contacts, call logs or SMS. If an app asks for these, deny them or uninstall it.
Keep Google Play Protect on
Play Protect scans apps on your phone, including sideloaded ones. It's under Play Store → Profile → Play Protect. It may warn you about apps from outside the store. Read the warning, and proceed only if you're sure the file came from the official source.
After installing
- Keep the app updated from the same official site.
- Delete the APK file from Downloads once it's installed.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use.
Want to skip APKs entirely?
Many apps run in your browser and can be added to your home screen. Our web app vs APK comparison explains when that's the better choice. And if an install fails, see fixing install and login problems.
